Appraisal Card

Property Appraisal:

Tax Appraisal Cards and Photographs

Years:   1936 - 1987

Format(s):  Paper and Microfilm

Description:

These cards document assessed values on commercial and residential properties located in Salt Lake County between the years 1936 to 1980. Traditionally, the collection represents appraisal dates for 1936, 1957, 1964 and 1980.

The 1936 assessments document ownership, address, location, kind of building, street number, class, base factor, stories, additions, sq. feet, actual factor totals, rooms, deductions, year built, depreciation, garage, appraisal date, and footprint drawings. In some cases fuel tanks, sewage tanks and gas pumps are noted. The 1957 cards document similar notations including insulation and air conditioning. And the cards for 1957 and 1980 detail supplementary appraisals, these are usually noted in colored pencil.

Also included in these packets are yellow and blue cards noting frontage area and additional appraisal evaluations.

Occasionally, two independent dwellings can be found together. This usually applies to rear buildings or adjacent structures. The noted difference is evident by reviewing building type, demolition, and previous use. It should be noted that occasionally documents could contain personal data on individuals.  This can only be reviewed by the persons involved, in some cases.

The Property Appraisal Photographs are sometimes found attached to the appraisal cards, but are generally filed separate. The photographs summarize the visual evidence of structural details. Documentation related to exterior walls, roof, cornices, dormers, shingles, windows, metal awnings, bays, patio, porches, and windows can be found.

Arrangement:

Tax Appraisal Cards are arranged by serial number.  The photographs are arranged by sidwell number.  Appraisal cards and appraisal photographs are physically stored separately for preservation reasons.

To Access:

Researchers must have the address of the property.  These records cannot be searched by name.

Taxes Paid:

Years: 1970 through 1996

Format:   paper, microfiche, microfilm

Documents the tax history of a property for the designated year.  The record contains the parcel number, address of the owner, property location, legal description, land value, value of improvements, and other information.  Reflects the total payments made during that specific year.

Arrangement:  Arranged by year, and then by sidwell or serial number.

To Access:

Researchers must have the address or tax number of the property.  They also should know the year(s) that they are interested in.  Without knowing the years, we cannot tell them whether we can access the tax entry for them.

Assesment Early Roll Call

Years: 1898 – 1969

Format: microfilm

To Access:

1898-1928:   Accessed by block, plat, township, section, and range.  Researchers must have this information to access these records.  These records only provide the name of the tax payer, and the amount paid.

1929-1949:  Sometimes accessed by a defunct serial number.  Researchers must have the address in order to access these records.  Please note: properties often change throughout the years (becoming smaller or larger), therefore the tax numbers assigned to properties over the years also change.  Accessing these tax records may require additional property research.
